Robert Metcalf

September 20, 1936 — September 20, 2020

Salt Lake City

Robert (Bob) Burnett Metcalf of Salt Lake City, Utah passed away peacefully on his 84th birthday Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the home of his youngest daughter after a long and valiant struggle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Bob was born in 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John Alvin and Myrine (Burnett) Metcalf. He was the middle of 3 sons. His childhood was spent enjoying family camping trips hunting and fishing together. He continued this love into his adulthood. Bob valued education and was the first in his family to receive a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in Political Science. This education served him well as he traveled the world for many years serving as a Peace Corp volunteer in Gabon, Africa and as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S State Department. During this time he met his beautiful wife, Pham Thi Ngoc Chung. They were married on January 10, 1971 in Saigon, Vietnam. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on November 18, 2006.

Bob and Ngoc Chung spent the first few years of their marriage traveling the world with their 2 daughters. They lived in Vietnam, Thailand, Guam, Israel, Hawaii, and California before returning back to Salt Lake City in 1981. Still wanting to further his education he received an MBA from the University of Southern California and began working for Moog Inc in Salt Lake City as a Systems Analyst. After he retired, he found joy serving in his church callings and as a Temple Worker in the Salt Lake Temple. His dream was to travel the world again but unfortunately due to Ngoc Chung’s long battle with Alzheimer’s he spent many of his later years caring for her until her passing in 2012. He was always sweet and tender with her and longed to be with her again.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and 2 brothers; Larry and Lynn Metcalf. He is survived by his children, Kathy Holley (Michael) and Anne Metcalf; grandchildren, Jillian, Nathan, and Katelyn.

We have no doubt that Bob’s 84th birthday was celebrated in a joyous reunion with his loving wife, father, mother, 2 brothers and many other family and friends.
