Mary North

January 1, 1957 — December 20, 2021

On June 29, 2021 Mary Lou lost her final match to cancer.  She was born in July of 1957 to Marvin E. Mumford and Norma Jean Wood.  She was an avid tennis player and loved playing with her favorite partner, her soul mate and eternal partner, James North.  Together they received the #1 ranking in mixed doubles in 1999 and a husband and wife national ranking of 21 in 2009.  She is survived by her team mates, her children, David (Ileah) Loyola, Tiffany (Cole) VandenAkker, Brett (Brennan) Loyola , Jeremy Loyola, as well as her three bonus children Skylar (Victoria) North, Blake (Valerie) North, and Kayli (Matthew) Koplin.  Siblings include Drew Mumford (Suzanne), Melanie Ashton (Roger), and Sue Smith (Gordon).  Preceded in death by her oldest sister, Marla Jean Cassity.

Mary Lou lived a full and rich life as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  Each calling taught her valuable lessons throughout her life, whether camping with the Young Women, leading music, playing the piano, speaking, or being Primary President.  Her favorite calling as Relief Society President taught her what it means to love.  She served an Inner City mission with her husband in the Jordan Parkway Ward.  She served as President of the Old Mill women’s golf league, captain of her tennis team and Nana to 20 grandchildren.  Her network of friends has been a tremendous help and comfort as she has battled cancer.

Mary Lou graduated from Highland High school in 1975.  She returned to college at the age of 50 and played on the junior college tennis team with her friend, Lynn Woodbury, and together they took 1st place.  She went on to graduate from the University of Utah, College of Business.  She followed her father’s footsteps as an accountant and loved working by his side for many years at Certified Warehouse.

One of the great loves of her life was reveling in the interests of her children and grandchildren.  Whatever the activity, Mary Lou was the #1 cheerleader, always there urging them on.  Her broad talents included helping grandchildren get ready for church, helping children through college, and admiring little league football and baseball players, tumblers, and dancers.  Her bright smile and ever positive outlook was inspiring to everyone around her.

Mary Lou will be sorely missed by all.  Her tremendous talents, her ability to include everyone, and her infectious laughter and kind demeanor are the hallmarks of her life.  It’s perfectly understandable why heaven seems to be so eager to welcome her home.
