Helmut Schulz

March 12, 1932 — September 25, 2020

Manti/Cottonwood Heights

Helmut Ferdinand Schulz, age 88, passed away peacefully in the midst of family on Friday September 25, 2020. Helmut was born on March 12, 1932 to Kurt Max and Martha Jeschke Schulz of Guben Germany. He was the firstborn son into a loving, righteous and hardworking family. Two other children would follow.

He married Elfriede Maria Grunewald, on November 22, 1957 in Cottbus Germany and was later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on July 13, 1963 for time and all eternity.  They spent 62 wonderful years together.

During the early years of his life with Elfriede, Helmut could be found tearing a German made engine apart and putting it back together. He had a talent to understand the workings of engines and loved to modify or repair them for himself and for others. This talent and the application of it proved to be a source of income for his family throughout most of his life.

In 1962, Helmut and Elfriede, along with two of their children, immigrated to Salt Lake City Utah to flee the effects of a post-World War II Germany.  Their desire to create a new life for themselves and their posterity away from the oppressive nature of the government-imposed restrictions truly changed and created a blessed life for hundreds of their posterity.

Perhaps the greatest joy in Helmut’s life was his relationship with his children.  He and Elfriede had seven children, Carola, Kerstin, Ramona, Roy, Daniel, Jennifer, and Melinda.

He worked with his hands all his life until he was unable to do so. He was a meticulous mechanic.  He also worked as a carpenter, building additions to his homes and serving others with his talents. He believed that he could do for himself just as well as he could hire something done.

Throughout his life he served in various callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including: Mission to the East Germany, mission with Elfriede to the Frieberg Germany temple, Seventy group leader, ward mission leader, gospel doctrine teacher, home teacher, and other ward and stake callings.

He loved the outdoors. One of his favorite places was his property in Tollgate Canyon where he, with the help of his children built a cabin.  He loved to be there with his family and would reminisce about the early times in a tent on the property.   He mostly enjoyed being with his family, sharing his memories of his youth and making memories for his family.

He was a righteous father and priesthood holder who desired the best for each and every member of his family. His legacy will be felt for future generations.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kurt Max, his mother Martha, his beloved daughter Jennifer, and his brother Juergan Schulz.

He is survived by his wife, Elfriede Grunewald of Manti Utah, and children: Carola Michel (Ullrich), Kerstin Sparks (Don), Ramona Roberts (Brent), Roy (Jori); Daniel (Brandie), Melinda Jorgensen (Kris), 27 grandchildren, 37 greatgrandchildren and a sister, Sigrid Holladay (Dan).
