Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Wynne Anne Marchant, 87, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024, at Covington Senior Living in Lehi, Utah.
Born January 11, 1937, in Salt Lake City, to Joseph Verne Taylor and Frona Winifred Peterson, Wynne Anne was the youngest of four children. She attended school at Wasatch Elementary and Horace Mann Junior High before graduating from West High in 1955. She studied drama and English in college and received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1960. She had a passion for education, which led to a distinguished career with the Granite School District that spanned five decades.
Wynne Anne first taught at Olympus High, followed by Cottonwood High, and Valley Junior High. After receiving her Master of Education degree from Brigham Young University in 1984, she became the Vice Principal of Granite Park Junior High and then the Principal of Twin Peaks Elementary. After Twin Peaks, she moved to Hunter Elementary, followed by Eastwood Elementary, where she received the Granite Education Foundation’s Excel Award for outstanding administrator in 2001. Wynne Anne was an amazing teacher and principal who cared deeply about her students and found great joy in helping them be successful in the classroom and beyond.
On June 3, 1960, Wynne Anne married her sweetheart Walter Reed Weight in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly afterward, they moved to Cottonwood Heights, where they raised their three children. Walt also worked for the Granite School District and taught art for 33 years at Evergreen Junior High before he passed away unexpectedly on September 18, 1989. Although Wynne Anne was devastated to lose her dear husband Walt, she found solace through her children and the many kind acts of family, friends, co-workers, and students. Eventually, Wynne Anne found love again and married Calvin Rolfe Marchant, an audiologist and retired military officer, in the Jordan River Temple on April 9, 1993.
Even during her most difficult trials, Wynne Anne was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served selflessly in many church callings and assignments. She had a tremendous impact as a leader of youth, serving as Young Women President at both the stake and ward levels. She served for nearly a decade as Stake Activities Director and was an outstanding Choir Director, a position she held many times. Wynne Anne also served as a temple worker in both the Salt Lake and Draper Temples, and in 2013, she and Cal were called as full-time missionaries in the Utah Salt Lake City East Mission, where they served for 18 months.
Her other interests included a love of theater and dancing; she directed several plays and musicals and was a regular attendee at the Hale Centre Theatre and Murray Arts Center, where she and Cal often danced the night away. Wynne Anne loved to travel, going to Europe on her honeymoon and taking numerous camping trips with Walt and later traveling around the world with Cal. Above all, she loved to travel to see her grandchildren, taking them to zoos, museums, and Disneyland, hosting dress-up tea parties with them, and being their literal Santa Claus for Christmas. She was an incredibly devoted mother and grandmother whose love and generosity had no limits. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
Wynne Anne was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Beth Tucker, Ronald Taylor, and Gene Taylor; and first husband, Walt. She is survived by her second husband, Cal; daughter Kristie Pearson and her husband, Troy, of Saratoga Springs, Utah; son Kevin Weight and his wife, Shelley, of Chandler, Arizona; son Kreg Weight and his wife, Melissa, of Ogden, Utah; Cal’s daughter Jeanine Howell and her husband, Joe, of West Jordan, Utah; and Cal’s son Darren Marchant and his wife, Judy, of Layton, Utah; nine grandchildren (Gracie, Livvi, Adam, Allison, Emily, Matthew, Klaire, Kooper, and Jade); and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Family members wish to thank Serenity Hospice of Utah, Spring Gardens Senior Living, Covington Senior Living, and Charity Medinger, in particular, for providing Wynne Anne loving comfort and care as she prepared to depart this earthly life.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Brighton Stake Center, 2895 East Creek Road, Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84093. Friends and family may call at Cannon Mortuary, 2460 East Bengal Boulevard, on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and at the stake center on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Interment: Memorial Mountain View Cemetery.
