Verna Metcalf

March 1, 1931 — August 13, 2013

Verna Jeane Wright Metcalf, Wife, Mother, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and Friend, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at home with her family.
Verna was born on March 1, 1931 to Theo Tracy Wright and Elsie Josephine Ahlstrom Wright.  She graduated from Granite High School class of “49.”  She married her sweetheart James Alvin Metcalf on May 18, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple.   Jim passed away just short of their 50th anniversary, so they had a great celebration with family on New Year’s Eve 2000.
Verna was known as a woman of incredible love and devotion to the Lord, to the many roles she played as a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.   She loved her family, immediate and extended, more than anything and gave her all to them throughout her life.  She received great joy from watching the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren and was a great cheerleader.
She enjoyed being home and always felt peace there, with her door always open wide to everyone she knew.  She was a peacemaker and others gravitated to her because of her great gifts to be able to listen, empathize and help others see the good in themselves, find strength in the Lord, and to find ways to show love and mercy.  She always made her home a sacred place where the spirit of the Lord was felt.
She enjoyed serving as a hostess at the Relief Society offices, her work at the University of Utah and her work at the Smith & Glauser Law Firm, but most of all she loved the relationships she formed there.
Verna is survived by her children:  Susan and Richard Imbler, Kathy and Dee Stevens, James and Tanya Metcalf, Nancy and Greg Coggle, Linda and Richard Glauser, Thomas and Ruth Metcalf; 32 grand-children, 34 great–grand-children, and her sisters:  Myrle Allen, Kay Schultz, and Anita Mumford.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters: Evelyn Rodebach, Alice VandenAker, and Lois Enders, her grandson: Benjamin James Isaacson, granddaughter: Keri Lyn Stevens, and great granddaughter: Elora Lyn Isaacson.
Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Salt Lake Olympus Stake Center, located at 2675 East 4430 South, Holladay, UT. Family will receive visitors Friday evening, 6-8 pm. at the Stake Center and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.   We appreciate Cannon Mortuary for their caring help with these arrangements and Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park for the Interment.
We, Verna’s family, wish to express our gratitude to her friends, family, ward members, doctors, nurses, the kind staff at A Caring Hand Home Care and also to the staff at Millcreek Hospice who helped us through this difficult time.Verna Jeane Wright Metcalf, Wife, Mother, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and Friend, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at home with her family.
