Ton Tan, a respected educator and community leader, passed away peacefully in his home on April 7, 2026, at the age of 96 of natural causes. Born on May 16, 1929, in Canton, China to Thin Tan and Phuong Ly.
On January 29, 1959, Ton married Chan Mau Troung in Saigon, Vietnam. Their partnership was a cornerstone of his life until her passing on May 11, 2025, just under a year before his own departure.
Ton was known for his role as the principal of the Utah Salt Lake City Chinese Hua Guang School, where he influenced generations of students with his commitment to education and cultural heritage. Beyond his educational leadership, he was honored to serve as the president of the Utah Indochina Chinese Benevolent Society.
His family was a cherished part of his life; he is survived by his son, Bryant Tan, and grandson, Byce Tan. He also leaves behind his brothers Minh Van Ly, David Tan, and Yee Cheung Ly, as well as his sisters Dee Tan, Anh Tan, and Lam Ly-Tran.
He was preceded in death by beloved family members, including his wife Chan Mau Troung, brothers Xin Kwang Lee and Duong Van Tan, and his parents Thin Tan and Phuong Ly.
A viewing followed by a funeral service will be held on May 2, 2026, at Cannon Mortuary, located at 2460 Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. The viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 10:45 a.m., with the funeral service starting promptly at 11:00 a.m. and concluding at 12:00 p.m.
