Born October 30th, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Our beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Sylvia Ann Conger Orton passed away peacefully at home on May 22, 2019, surrounded by her family and an abundance of love. Sylvia was diagnosed in December 2018 with Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Sylvia wanted to make it to June so the weather would be nice for the guests of her graveside service. She was always thinking of others comfort above her own right until the end.
Sylvia was born to Erma Green Conger and Everett Merle Conger of Butler, Utah. She lived her whole life in in the Butler/Cottonwood Heights area. She attended Butler Elementary, Union Jr. High, Mt. Jordan Jr. High, and Jordan High School. She married Almon Day Orton in 1971. Together they raised four daughters.
Sylvia worked for 11 years at Beneficial Life, 10 years at Mountain Bell, and 6 years at Precision Wire and Telephone. She retired from The Deseret Newspaper in 2004 after 18 years of service in the Newspaper in Education Department. In 1997 Sylvia began working for the Utah Jazz, which ended up becoming her favorite work place. Sylvia was loved by her co-workers, the media, Jazz players, her fans, and everyone who visited the arena.
Throughout her life she provided service to others. She was always there to take good care of her friends and family. Over the years she held many positions in her church and took great pride in her service. She was a long time active member of the PTA, serving in many roles, including President. She served as the Secretary of the Cottonwood Heights Historic Committee and took pride in creating the displays for Buttlerville Days and other events.
Sylvia enjoyed working in her yard, camping, traveling, going to the movies, and taking long drives. On her drives she loved to take you on a scenic route or the back roads. She was able to make just about anything grow, and her yard is full of beautiful plants and flowers as proof. Sylvia had many cherished friendships and she loved spending time with each of her dear friends. She especially loved spending time with her Granddaughters.
Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Nikkel (Troy Hayden), Dayna (Nadeem Nasir), Suzanne (Chris O’Bryant), and Lorrie; sisters, Gayle Conger and Laura Miller; granddaughters, Gracie, Sophie & Ellie (O’Bryant).
Preceded in death by her husband, Al, brothers, Weldon & Richard Conger.
Sylvia’s family would like to thank her dear friend, Jon Absey, for arranging a flight, with Randon Aviation. She was able to fly over her childhood home, and experience the thrill of riding a “roller coaster” in the sky. Her family is also thankful for the many friends and neighbors who were so supportive during the past six months. Special appreciation goes to the staffs at IMC, Utah Cancer Center, and CNS Hospice
