Stephen Comerford Oswald passed away peacefully at his home in Sandy, Utah, on July 6, 2026.
He was born October 16, 1934, in Alameda, California, to Grace Isabel Comerford and Lawrence Anton Oswald. Stephen graduated from Alameda High School in 1952. He went on to study music and business at San Francisco State College before earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in World Trade from Armstrong College in Berkeley, California, in 1959.
He met his future wife, Bonnie, in the San Francisco Bay Area. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 9, 1966. He remained a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life, serving in many callings, including as an MLS missionary alongside Bonnie in the Salt Lake South Mission.
During his service in the 561st Unit of the Air Force National Guard Band, he often traveled and performed. One highlight was his participation in President Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1957 Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. His love of music continued throughout his life. He played the trombone in more than a dozen bands over the years, performing big band, swing, and Dixieland music well into his later years.
Beyond music, he had a passion for photography and deeply loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, backpacking, and sailing. After years of sailing on the San Francisco Bay, he continued the hobby after moving to Utah, sailing on the Great Salt Lake.
Stephen is survived by his children, David (Stephanie), Daniel, and Shannon McKee (Adam); five grandchildren, Dane, Jacob, Ashton, Nathaniel, and Noelle; his brother, Daniel Oswald; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bonnie; his parents, Grace and Lawrence; and his brother, John.
He will be deeply missed by his family.
