Our beloved, father, grandfather & great-grandfather, peacefully returned home to his Heavenly Father and beloved wife and daughter on June 6, 2025 at the age of 94 of natural causes.

Sherman Longshaw Record was born on June 9, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the 5th son born to Odes B Record and Dorcus Eve May Longshaw. His childhood was filled with many happy memories and adventures with his four big brothers and the “gang” on Logan Avenue. The neighbors on Logan Avenue were a close bunch. Every year when the corn was ready his parents would host the whole neighborhood, at least 50 people, in their backyard, for the annual "corn feed” to help eat the corn Sherm’s mom and dad had grown that summer. At other times of the year the neighborhood would get together for street dances, hot dog roasting, songfests, resort outings and the annual “track meet” for kids ages 5-13. He had many happy memories growing up on Logan Ave.

As a youth he attended Irvine Junior High School and then on to East High School. He had many friends, with outings to the fishing hole and happy memories of all his school years.

Sherman loved fishing his whole life and after he was married he had a new fishing buddy, his father-in-law, Alma. They would hook up the trailer for weekend outings along the Green River, Ham’s Fork or the upper Provo near Hannah. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting with his dad.

Sherman honorably served in the United States Army for 2 years during the Korean War. During those years he was blessed to just barely escape active combat and was able to see a little of the world such as: Ft Lewis, Washington; Ft Bragg, N.C; Barcelona, Spain; and Germany. He sailed on the USS United States.

After army life he met the love of his life Joan Brimhall, whom he lovingly called Joanie. They were married the Salt Lake Temple on March 12, 1954 and they were blessed with four children. His family and his sweetheart were his greatest joys in life. Joan and Sherman were very devoted to each other and stood by each other during many hard trials over their 64 years together. Sherman was a loving faithful husband and father and he took such good care of his wife when she was so ill in her later life.

Sherman had many hobbies which he really got to spend time on after he retired from the Board of Health, where he gave 30 years of exceptional service to the community. Some of those hobbies included building very intricate large models of some famous ships. Each ship took the better part of a year to complete and he built five of them. His favorite was a model of the US Constitution.

He also had a passion and skill for restoring old clocks and got them ticking again! He also restored old “scales” his from the 1900’s including his grandfather’s scales that he had used as a professional jeweler. He loved finding and collecting rare and beautiful rocks which he polished and displayed throughout the house. He always said he missed his calling in life, that of being a geologist, for his profession. He also collected coins and pocket knives and had large collections of both.

He didn’t get to travel much, however, he and his wife were able to make it over to England on two separate occasions where many relatives lived. He created some close bonds with some of them and thoroughly loved the people and culture.

Sherman is survived by three of his children: Michelle Record Shepherd, Keri Record Curtis and Geoff Record; 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, and his oldest daughter, Wendy Ruth Record McQueen.

Special thanks goes out to Highland Cove Assisted Living who took care of Sherman for the past 4 months.

We are so grateful to Cannon Mortuary for the loving care and exceptional service and kindness offered to our family.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 10th at 11:00 am at the Murray City Cemetery, 5490 S. Vine St, Murray, Utah.
