Richard Scharman

March 18, 1932 — August 4, 2016

Richard Evans Scharman (Dick)
1932 ~ 2016

Richard Evans Scharman (Dick) rendered his last day of service on this earth on August 4, 2016, passing away peacefully at home in the company of his family. To his last breath, Dick lived his life joyfully and according to Christ's great admonition: "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

Dick was born on March 18, 1932, in Salt Lake City to Roy W. Scharman and Margaret Giles Scharman. He and his brothers were later raised by their father and step-mother Dee Robertson Scharman. After serving as a marine in the Korean War, he married his sweetheart Delores McKee on April 23, 1954. They were later sealed in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on January 15, 1962.

He is survived by his wife, seven of his nine children, Robyn (Michael) Brade, Dan, Brian, Mark (Kim), Chris (Amy), Brett (Jodi), Scott (Robyn), many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his brother Russ. Dick and Delores have 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Michael, daughter Carolyn, daughter-in-law Kymm (Dan) and their two sons, Chase and Christian, and brothers Roy Jr., George, Robert, and Jeff.

Second only to his complete dedication and faithfulness to his wife and children, Dick counted as his greatest accomplishment in life the opportunity he had to serve as the Bishop of the Butler Third Ward, where his passion and love were focused intensely on the members, and particularly the youth, of the ward. Throughout the rest of his life, he would be known simply as Bishop Scharman. Years later he would write, "I felt the members of the ward were the most important to me, so I tried to be and do everything for them." To this day, his children and grandchildren are guided by and try to live up to his example of service.
