Patricia Schofield Brough, our loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, age 82, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in Salt Lake City, Utah, from health complications due to a glioblastoma brain tumor.

Pat was born October 5, 1930 in Los Angeles, California to Cutler and Edith Mickel Schofield. At a very young age, she and her family moved to Spring City, Utah. She loved growing up in the small town of Spring City where she attended grade school and then graduated from North Sanpete High School where she was active in music circles. Because of her dedication to music, Pat was awarded a two year music scholarship to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. Following graduation, she transferred to Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

While attending a sorority-fraternity exchange at USU, she met her sweetheart Sherman. They dated several months and just before graduation they were pinned. Pat and Sherm married July 3, 1953 in the LDS Manti Temple and for nearly 60 years they remained loving and faithful companions. Pat went on to graduate from USU with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and then put her degree to use by teaching second grade in the Salt Lake City school district for a year.

Her early life became a template for her family. She taught and instilled in her children a love of music, education, and service. She was very proud of the fact that she and her husband helped support each of their four children graduate from university.

While living for several years in Washington State, Sherm received his master’s degree in Botany from the University of Washington and Pat began to raise their family. In 1964 the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada came calling—Pat supported Sherm while he worked on his doctorate at UBC. What was meant to be a temporary stay in Vancouver turned into nearly 30 years as her husband went on to teach science education at UBC. They enjoyed many wonderful friendships in Vancouver and played an active leadership role in the LDS Vancouver Ward congregation.

After retirement in 1992, Pat and Sherm returned to live in Utah where they were warmly welcomed by new friends and neighbors in the Cottonwood Heights area near Salt Lake City. Pat cherished her time spent in the neighborhood and the Brighton wards; she felt like life had come full circle living in her childhood home state of Utah again.

Pat loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Notably, she was famous for her chocolate chip cookies and rolls. Over the years, she orchestrated many family gatherings, especially at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and 4th of July. She left a legacy of many wonderful family traditions that she started and made so memorable for her children and grandchildren. Her keen sense of humor, loving heart, and family leadership is already missed. Pat enjoyed chocolate-making, sewing, working on family history, and shopping for clothes with her only daughter Anne. When Anne passed away in 1992 and her eldest son, David, passed away in 2004, Pat was devastated and heartbroken. In the following years, including the days just before she passed away, Pat found strength and solace in knowing that she would be with them again. We know that a happy reunion is already taking place.

Pat is survived by her husband and two sons, Richard (Margaret) of Orem, Utah, Andrew of Salt Lake City, Utah; son-in-law Ivo Stutznegger of Sandy, Utah, and daughter-in-law Bonnie of Vernon, British Columbia; sister Yvonne Whitmore of Pittsford, New York, and brother Robert Schofield of Salt Lake City, Utah; 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Huntsman Cancer Institute, the University of Utah, and to Ginger at The Coventry, Marina from Curo Hospice, and the many CNAs who cared for Pat over the past seven weeks. Thank you also to the many wonderful family, friends, and neighbors of Pat who reached out with their kind and timely visits, phone calls, and letters.

In keeping with Pat’s wishes, a private family services were held at Cannon Mortuary on Saturday, February 9, 2013. She was laid to rest at Larkin Sunset Gardens cemetery in Sandy, Utah.
