Mark was a believer in life-long education, earning an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah.  Beginning with his doctoral dissertation, Mark became a nationally-recognized expert in university related research parks and directed the development of top-tier facilities at both the University of Utah and Texas A&M University. He served as the founding president of the Association of University Related Research Parks. Mark loved to travel and served as a consultant to emerging research facilities all over the world.

Mark married his college sweetheart, Roylance Spratling, in the Manti LDS Temple in July, 1952. They were blessed with four children: Nolan Boyce, David Royal, Cynthia, and Richard Bruce. Roylance and Mark have 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to serving his country, Mark held a variety of community and church leadership positions over the years, including Branch President of the University of Utah Student Ward, member of the General Board of the YMMIA, and a High Council member in Utah and Texas.
