Alice Jeanne Laver Nichols
1924 to 2014
One more of the angels who live among us have left us behind. Alice Jeanne Laver Nichols, 89, died peacefully and quietly in the afternoon on Friday, January 24, 2014.
Jeanne was born in October 1924, as the sixth child of nine. She was raised in rural Northern Utah and learned the value of hard work, personal integrity, love of self and family, and the ability to laugh in the face of adversity. She learned the value of never ending faith in God as she worked her way through the trials of her life.
She married at age 22. Seven years later her first child was born. He came out screaming and managed to maintain that intensity the rest of his life. Three more children followed during the next six years. Each would test her resolve, faith, and compassion in his or her own way. But regardless of the test, one fact always proved true -- her family was her life. Even after her children were grown and had children of their own, Jeanne managed to change diapers, fix meals, provide first aid for cuts and bruises, and even take an occasional nap with a grandchild. In fact, she occasionally could be found snoring peacefully in the same room where an on looking grandchild -- who should be napping -- stood keeping a quiet watch from the crib. She managed to care for grandchildren as masterfully as she had her own.
She learned to master her fears. Being painfully shy in the public arena, Jeanne was hesitant to accept jobs where she was required to speak in front of crowds. Still, she set aside her fears and always attacked the challenges head on. Many primary aged children were strengthened by the loving, kind attention Jeanne always managed to offer.
Jeanne was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Richard. She missed him terribly and could be found occasionally scolding his picture in her room for not coming to get her. Jeanne was also preceded in death by her parents, seven of her siblings, her oldest son, Jack and a son-in-law, Dan. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lauretta, daughter, Leigh, son, David (Debra) and daughter, Laurie. Jeanne is also survived by her 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
