It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful father, brother, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend Golden Gayle Bowthorpe “Bow” peacefully surrounded by his family on October 23, 2025.

Gayle was born the oldest of four children (2 brothers and 1 sister) in Holladay, Utah to Nephi Ford Bowthorpe and Caroline Ison (Tester) on August 22, 1936. He always reminisced about growing up on valley view drive before the hills of Salt Lake City were full of homes and highways. His childhood was spent riding horses, swimming in the creek, sticking up for his younger brothers, and the occasional getting into trouble. He attended Olympus High School and served in the Army. Gayle spent his younger years riding his Triumph motorcycle across the open landscape. He loved motorbikes throughout his life, won many racing trophies, and spending time in his favorite place-the garage. He spent hours working on his Triumphs, organizing his tools, and getting ready for the next bike restore. As a matter of fact he was still racing his motorcycle around the block at the age of 88 which sent some of his children into complete panic.

Gayle married Lois Nan Beck in 1960, and they had five children together: four boys and a girl. He worked hard to support his family and was a loving father taking them on family outings, camping, and fishing. Gayle enjoyed watching his boys play hockey and coaching Little League Baseball. His brand of humor and no-nonsense attitude made a lasting impression. He maintained close relationships with the same group of friends he had known since childhood, and they spent many mornings together over coffee, chatting and teasing one another.

Gayle worked at Theater Service Supply in the 50’s where he helped manufacture trailers, Ajax Mill and Press where he was the lead Machinist/Welder, then Triumph West as the lead Mechanic. He had an amazing work ethic which he took great pride in.

Those who knew Gayle will remember his sharp wit, steady presence, and the way he could work on just about anything. He was loyal, honest, and unapologetically himself—a man who valued hard work, friendship, and family above all else. He definitely emulated his given name Golden.

He is survived by his brother Ford, sons Kelly (Leah), Brady (Ann), Andy (Susan), Burke (Lisa), and daughter Amanda (Chad). 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Gayle is preceded in death by his father and mother, his wife Nan, his brother Larry, and his sister Carol.

Funeral services will be held Monday November 3rd at 11:00 am at Cannon Mortuary located at 2460 East Bengal Blvd. (7600 South) Salt Lake City, Utah. Viewing will be held 10:00 am to 10:45 am prior to the service at Cannon Mortuary.
