Dr. Gary B. Stanford, 78, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at his home in Holladay, Utah.

Gary Brewster Stanford was born in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, on September 26, 1937. He was the third son of (Nunham) Glenn Stanford and Mary Ann Brewster Stanford.  In 1940 his family moved to Rosemary, Alberta, where he graduated from high school.  In 1961, he graduated from the Faculty of   Medicine, University of Alberta, in Edmonton, where he was selected as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society after his first year.  After receiving his MD, he served as a Rotating Intern at the Calgary General Hospital.  He then practiced Family Medicine, including General Surgery and Obstetrics, in Calgary and Lake Louise, Alberta.

Dr. Stanford attended Harvard Medical School for Ophthalmology training and continued his specialty at Columbia University, as a Fellow in Ophthalmic Pathology, a Clinical Resident, and Chief Resident for two rotations, concluding in 1968.

Dr. Stanford was known to his colleagues, assistants, and patients as a compassionate and hard-working physician.  He served as President of the Utah Society to Prevent Blindness, and as Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology for the LDS, Primary, and St. Mark's Hospitals.

Dr. Stanford was known for his prodigious memory, his great love of cats, his beautiful seashell collection, gardening, and especially for the innumerable and untold acts of service he gave to so many throughout the years. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his brother Walter William (Myrna) Stanford and his sister Marianne (Thomas) Flanagan, both of Calgary, Alberta.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Nunham Glenn (Katherine) Stanford of Stirling, Alberta, and George Leland (Ellen) Stanford of Spring Coulee, Alberta.  He leaves behind 12 nieces and nephews and many whose friendship and association were important to him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 1250 E 4800 S (Murray-Holladay Road),  in Holladay, UT. The visitation will be from 12:00 to 12:45. Interment will take place on November 7, 2015 in Stavely, Alberta.
