Donald Eugene Gregonis

1943 – 2016

Don succumbed to the ravaging effect of neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer on August 10, 2016.  He was born in Geneva, Illinois on October 7, 1943 to Joseph and Rose Gregonis.  They moved to a farm in Silverton, Oregon during the start of his freshman year in high school.  He followed his interests and obtained a BS degree in chemistry in 1967 at Portland State University.  He came to Utah for his advanced degree and obtained a PhD in organic chemistry in 1972.  Following a year of postdoctoral training at University of British Columbia, he returned to Salt Lake and worked in research in materials science and engineering, bioengineering and pharmaceutics.  During the early 1980's, he cofounded a successful medical company, Albion Instruments, which was later sold during the early '90's.   We wish to thank Dr. Gilcrease at Huntsman Cancer Institute for his care and all the staff who were part of his team.  We also want to thank the Community Nursing Service Hospice staff, pharmacy, medical supplies and Deseret medical supplies.   Donations may be made in Don’s name to Community Nursing Service, 2830 South Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, Utah 84119 or Huntsman Cancer Institute, 200 Circle of Hope Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112 specifically for pancreatic research.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie, brothers Mel (Sharon) and Robert (Janet) and sister Georgiana Terlecki (Bill) and three cats, Peaches, Linus and Paws. He loved the outdoors and sports such as hiking, tennis, golf (2 holes in one) and skiing.

His body will be cremated and his ashes are being returned to a gravesite next to his Mom and Dad in Silverton, Oregon.  He appreciated all the smart and interesting people he has had interaction with over the years.  "Good-bye my friends and .......stay thirsty."    A memorial service will be planned at a later date for all his friends to bid a fond farewell.  A Mass will be held at 5:00 pm on Saturday August 20th at St. Ambrose Church in Salt Lake City.
