Beverly Newson

June 25, 1931 — December 9, 2022

Beverly Newson, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, age 91, passed away December 9, 2022, at her home in Sandy, Utah. She was born June 25, 1931, in Cottonwood Heights, Utah to Wilford and Viola Hansen (Webster).

Beverly had an immense love of education – both learning and teaching. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Utah in 1973. Beverly served as a math teacher at Butler Middle School for 20 years and continued working with students as a tutor several years into retirement. Most importantly, she helped many of her grandchildren pass algebra.

In retirement, Beverly enjoyed traveling with educational tour groups. Her favorite places to visit were Mexico and China, and she always came back with fascinating stories about different cultures and world history.

Beverly loved nature and science. You would often find her standing by her kitchen window watching deer, foxes, or quail make a home in her beautiful backyard. If you found yourself on a road trip with Beverly, you had a good chance of getting a geology lesson when she spotted a particularly interesting rock formation.

Beverly was a prolific and talented quilter. She took her love of geometry and turned it into an art form. A day did not go by when she was not working on a quilt.

She was fiercely independent and determined to create her own path. She taught us all so much more than math and geology - she taught us to make our own way, learn to take care of ourselves, be generous with the people around us, and always have ingredients in your freezer to make a quick soup.

Beverly is survived by children Kim McCarrel, Dick Newson, Kirk Newson, Steve Newson, and Dawn Brecke, 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren, and brothers Harvey Hansen and Ronald Hansen.

The family is immensely grateful to Aspen Ridge Health and Hospice for their compassion as they helped make the final few weeks of her life more comfortable.

A celebration of Beverly’s incredible life will be held Thursday, December 15, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cannon Mortuary, 2460 Bengal Blvd. (7600 South), Cottonwood Heights.  An informal graveside farewell will be held Friday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East Bengal Blvd. (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights.
