Berenice H. Morris

Angel Mother

Our beautiful angel mother, Berenice Harris Morris, affectionately known as “Bee,” returned to her Heavenly Father on May 12, 2011. Although our hearts are tender and we will miss her radiant smile, we rejoice in the knowledge that we will be united again one day.

Mom was born on April 23, 1922, in Lovell, Wyoming, to Leland and Winiferd Harris. It was on the family farm that she learned to yodel while working in the fields. Mother grew up in a family that loved singing, and she carried her love of music throughout her life. We loved to hear her sing, and she had a song for every occasion.

She attended BYU and the University of Utah, where she met her sweetheart Mel. When he was drafted into the army at the onset of World War II, they corresponded almost daily. Most of their courtship was through letters. They were married on December 3, 1942, during a three-day furlough, and they were together almost 60 years until Dad’s death. Most of their married life they lived in the Grandview First Ward, where they made many dear friends over the years.

Mom was an extraordinary homemaker and mother. We five children were raised with love, laughter, music, prayer, and homemade bread.

As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mom’s pioneer heritage was very important to her. She loved the gospel and served selflessly, using her talents and abilities to bless the lives of those around her, from little children, to sisters in the Relief Society, to the missionaries in the Sao Paulo, Brazil, Missionary Training Center.

One of Mom’s greatest gifts was charity. Many neighbors and family members were the recipients of quilts, home cooked meals, and other acts of service. She tenderly cared for Mel’s mother and her parents in her own home for many years.

Mom loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was always interested in their lives, supporting them in everything they did. There is nothing we loved more than to gather around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Dola Hofeling, Delsa Asay, and brother Darrel Harris, and her husband Mel. She is survived by her brother, DeVerle (Sandra) Harris, her children Melodie (Bryan) Larsen, Jewel (Chuck) Pugh, John (Vicky) Morris, Joy (Bob) Ligget, and Caralyn (Mark) Buehner, thirty-four grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Grandview Ward, 2930 South 2000 East, on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held on Friday, May 20, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Grandview Ward and Saturday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to the services. Entombment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Garden of the Lilies.

We want to thank the good people at Utah Cancer specialists, CNS hospice, and Nau Masiva and Ofa Molisi for their compassionate care.
