Juanita (Nita) Merryweather passed away in her South Jordan home early Tuesday morning. She was born in Hurricane, Utah on March 10, 1930 to Hans Maurice and Juanita Naegle. She married the one and only lover of her life Walter Parry Merryweather in 1948 while he was on active duty in Korea. Nita spent the first year of married life waiting for him home. When he returned, they moved to Costa Mesa, California, where in 1956 they were elated to adopt their daughter Jane.
Soon after they moved back to Utah and eight years later Walter & Nita’s heart swelled even further when in 1964, they adopted their son Lee while living in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Juanita was never the type to stand still, involved in several different organizations including the Rotary Club, Juanita was the president of the women’s Pharmacy Auxiliary and many church callings including Relief Society President and Cub Scout leader.
Juanita and Walt started building their dream house and moved near Olympus Cove where Nita spent 37 years working as a secretary for Granite School District even being named Secretary of the Year.
During her nearly 90 years she was known as quite a firecracker, her many friends, grandkids and great grandkids knew her as an independent and always cheerful person who was as steady and strong willed as she was humble and open minded.
The last year represented a difficult time for her as her body was not as cooperative with her outgoing personality. Although her home of 37 years was in the heart of Cottonwood Heights, her children were able to convince her that the Sheridan in South Jordan could give her the opportunity to maintain her independence as well as provide her with the 24-7 care she needed to receive while in the last 2 months of her life.
With broken hearts her family had to say goodbye to the matriarch of many generations creating a hole that can never be replaced.
Juanita is survived by her children, Jane & Paul O’Bray and Lee & Amber Merryweather. Grandchildren, Sherri & Robby Monson, Chelsea & Amos McElheny, Devery & Jake Morrison, Tyson & Allie O’Bray, Zach & Carly O’Bray, Trevor O’Bray, Trisity & Micheal Holm, Christian Merryweather, Erykah Merryweather, Ashlynn Merryweather, Seleh Stremke and Kepler Laws. She will also be greatly missed by her 16 great grandchildren.
As we reflect on this loss, we invite all of her friends and family to celebrate her amazing life with us at a memorial service on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Cottonwood Heights 2nd Ward 6890 S 2225 E, Salt Lake City, Utah.
