Grace Howell Mackay was reunited with her eternal loving companion, passing away Monday, March 8, 2010 with family by her bedside in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Grace Mackay was born June 8, 1926 to Rolla Fern and Bessie Sowby Howell in Garfield, Utah.  She graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City.  She served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Spanish American Mission from 1948-1950.

She married Theron Lambert Mackay March 18, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple.  They later moved to California, where they raised 6 children: 4 sons, 2 daughters.  They also served as parents to Indian Placement Students.

She was active her entire life in the LDS Church; serving in all organizations with various callings.  She especially loved working in Cub Scouting, where she taught hundreds of boys and their adult leaders, over the decades.

Her most important priority was her family.  She was generous in spending her time with them and showing her support by attending events and volunteering for her children’s teams.

Her legacy of faith and missionary work is exemplified by having five children and one foster daughter serve as missionaries.  Grace and Theron served a mission together in the Ivory Coast Abidjan Mission from 1991 – 1993.  So far three grandsons have served missions.  She was an active member of the Grandview Camp, Salt Lake Canyon Trails Company, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

She is survived by her 6 children: Hyrum John (Barbara Boyack); Elizabeth; Theron Reed (Gerry Stoddard); David Rollo (Laurie Smith); Richard Alan (Wendy Clemons); Katherine (Michael Tolman); 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; brother, Donald (Lucille Hutcheon) Howell and sister, Melba Holmes.  She also leaves behind many who call her “Grandma” or friend.  Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and brother-in-law, Dee Holmes.

Her love = family, her life = service to others, her legacy = her testimony of and faith in the Savior to guide us in helping others.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, March 13, 2010, 10:00 a.m. at the Grandview 1st Ward, 2930 South 2000 East, Salt Lake City, Utah.  A viewing will be held Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 S.) from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and the day of the service at the church from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m.  Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Dear Mackay family,

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Your mother was a very fine woman. She was a loyal friend to my mother for as long as I can remember. She truly lived what she believed.

Sincerely,

Bill Kappele.

I was saddened to hear of your mothers
recent passing. I have very fond memories of her warm smile and infinitely giving nature when we all lived in Mission Viejo. My mother, Reva Fillis, was friends with Grace and asked to convey her deepest sympathy to the family. All the Lord's comfort and blessings to you.

To the family of Grace Mackay

We want you to know that we share your sorrow and grieving at this time.

Your mother was a very special lady to our family.
She was always there in times of need to provide support and help wherever she could.

Margaret always spoke of Grace in the highest regard as a friend and co-worker in the various church activities in which they participated.

Grace gave a wonderful talk at Margaret

We want to express our sympathy to your family. Your mother was always very kind, and I never remember seeing her without a smile on her face. She was also very kind and thoughtful. When we moved to Maine, she came over and helped me wash windows one day. I really appreciated that.
Share your sympathies and condolences.
